Lap belts with retractors (fig. d) may or may not hold a car seat securely.
Follow these steps to determine if you have a retractor system that will hold car seat securely:
a. Pull belt all the way out.
b. Allow belt to retract about 6 inches (15 cm).
c. Pull out on belt again.
If belt is locked and you cannot pull the belt out any further, you have an Automatic
Locking Retractor which may be used with a car seat. Remember, when installing a
car seat, pull belt all the way out, buckle belt, and then tighten.
If the belt pulls out (step c), the retractor is an Emergency Locking Retractor which must
not be used with a car seat.

front door. Belts will not stay tight while driving.

• Failure to use the belt lock-off where required will result in car seat not being securely held in place.
Belt Lock-off
To secure lap belt with belt lock-off:
Remove the belt lock-off from its storage location on the back of the car seat.
The belt lock-off is attached to the seat pad behind top of seat back.
Install car seat without the base and tighten vehicle seat belt as instructed in
“Securing Infant Car Seat Without Base” section.
Hold vehicle seat belts together at latch plate (fig. c). Release vehicle seat belt
buckle.
Open the belt lock-off and slide over both belts (fig. d), placing
it as close to the latch plate as possible (1/2 inch to 1 inch /
1.3 cm to 2.5 cm maximum). Secure belt lock-off by pivoting
lock tab down onto belt lock-off.
Resecure the vehicle lap belt around the infant car seat.

You MUST use the belt lock-off (fig. a) provided to tightly secure the lap belt with a
vehicle lap/shoulder belt that slides freely through the latch plate.
To open the belt lock-off:
- Lift lock tab .
- Lift lock-off tab .
