• Makesurethatyourpreampdoesnothavethebass(tonecontrol)levelturneddown.
• Manysurroundpreamplifiershavecontrols,whichcandirectallthebasstosubwoofers,orletyourmainspeakers
playthefullrange.Makesurethatthepreamplifierhasbeencorrectlyset.Ifyouarenotusingasubwoofer,setthe
speakeroptionsto“Large”wherepossible.
• Checkthatthespeakerwireshavebeenconnectedcorrectly:Makesurethatthepositiveofeachspeakerconnects
toapositiveoutputoftheamplifier,andthenegativeofeachspeakerconnectstothenegativeoutput.Ifone
speakeriswiredincorrectly,thenitwillbe“outofphase”withtheothers,resultinginpoorbassperformance.

Turn‐onandTurn‐offThumps
• Plugtheamplifierintoanun‐switchedACoutlet,andusethe3.5mmTriggerInputconnectionwithatrigger
between5‐12VDCfromthesourceunitorpreamplifier.Thisshouldallowtheamplifiertoturnonandoff silently.
• Ifyourpoweredsubwooferisthecauseofthe“thump”sound(nottheotherspeakersconnectedtotheamplifier),
plugitintoadifferent115VACoutletthantheamplifiersothereisnopowersurgeconflict.
• Installaline‐conditioningdevice.
“Hum”NoisesintheSpeakers
• Thisproblemismorethanlikelycausedbya“groundloop”inyoursystem,ratherthanafaultintheamplifier.
Followthesestepstoisolatethemaincauseofthehum;theremayevenbemorethanone.Remembertoturnoff
allcomponentsinyoursystem,includingtheamplifier,beforedisconnectingorconnectinganycablesduring
troubleshooting.
• Trytohaveallofyourequipmentonthesameelectricaloutletorcircuit.Groupallthelowpowercomponents
(preamp,CDplayer,DVDetc.)onasingleoutletorpowerstrip.Thisisprovidedthattheoverallcurrentdrawfrom
yourequipmentdoesnotexceedtheratingoftheoutletorbreaker.
• Disconnectallcables,whichcomefromoutsidetheroom,andcheckifthehumgoesaway.Thisincludessuch
connectionsascableTV,satelliteTV,orrooftopantennas.Makesurethattheyaredisconnectedwheretheyfirst
entertheroom,sotheyaremakingnoconnectiontothepreamplifierortheTV,oranyothercomponent.Ifthehum
iscausedbythecableTVline,thenyouwillneeda“groundloopisolator.”Thisisaninexpensivedevicefittedinline
withthecoaxialcablefeed.ContactyourCableCompanyorEmotivaforassistance.
• DisconnectallconnectionsfromthepreamplifiertoyourTV,VCRorDVD.
• Asatest,disconnectanyothercomponent,whichhasagroundedpowercord.
NOTE:Neverremovethegroundpinfromanypowercords(ifpresent).Thisisverydangerous.
Ifthehumpersists,disconnectallthesourcecomponentsoneatatimefromthebackofthepreamplifier,untilyouidentify
theproblem.
• Trymovingthespeakercablesawayfromanypowercords.Tryjustonespeaker,connectingittoeachamplifier
channelandseeifonechannelisbad.
Checkthattheinterconnectcablestotheamplifierdonothaveanybrokenconnections.Thebestwaytodothisisto
substituteaknowngoodconnectionforthesuspectconnection.Ifyoureversethecablesandtheproblemgoesaway,the
cablemaybedamagedorbroken.Thisispossibleevenifyoucan’tphysicallyseethebreakasthestrainforpullingonaudio
cablescansometimesbreakthewireinternally.
