feedthemdirectlyintothemainmix.You’vejustlearned
abouttheoptionalexceptionsinvolvingstereoreturn3.
Stereoreturn4alsohasanoptionalexception:By
engagingthisswitch,youwillremovestereoreturn4’s
stereosignalfromthemainmixandsenditdirectlyto
theCR/phonessource[42]matrix.Itmattersnotifany
ofthesourcematrixswitchesareassigned,butitwillbe
interrupted,asusual,ifasolo[27]switchisengaged.
Let’spretendyou’redoingalivemixtoa2-trackdeck,
ahousePA,orboth,andyouwanttoplayalongtoa
clicktrack.Youcouldruntheclicktrackdirectlyinto
themainmix,butyoudon’twantthemixdowndeck
and/oraudiencetohearit.Bygum,thisistheswitch
foryou.Similarly,itcanbeusedforvoice-overtracks,
narration,anythingyouwantheardbytheengineerand
playersbutnotbytheaudienceandmixdowndeck.
56. Returns Solo and LED
Thisswitchoperatesjustlikethechannelsolo[27]
switches—engagingitsendssignalstothecontrol
room,headphones,andmeterdisplay,andinterrupts
whateverhappenedtobetherebeforeyousoloed.
Itfollowsthemode[44]switchsettingaswell.
Theonlydifferenceisthatwhenyouengagethis
returnssoloswitch,itsendsallfourstereoreturns
signalstothesolocircuit.
Assumeyouwanttosolothesnaredrum.Hitthat
channel’ssoloswitch,andyougetthe“dry”(noeffects)
snareonly.Thathelps,butyouwanttohearitwiththe
reverbyouhavepatchedintoastereoreturn.Leaving
thatchannel’ssoloswitchengaged,alsoengagethe
returnssoloswitch,andnowyou’llgetthedrysnare
anditsreverb.
Sinceitisaglobalfeature,you’llalsogetthesignals
fromalltheotherstereoreturns,sotheremaybesome
soundsthatyoudidn’twanttohear.Iftheyoffendyour
sensibilities,simplyturndownthelevelsofthestereo
returnsyoudon’twanttohear,ormutethechannels
feedingtheunwantedsignaltotheeffectsdeviceyou
dowanttohear.
