Effects: Serial Or Parallel?
You’vehearduscarelesslytossaroundtheterms
“serial”and“parallel.”Here’swhatwemeanbythem:
“Serial”meansthattheentiresignalleavesthemixer
[insert(4)send],isroutedthroughtheeffectsdevice,
andreturnstothemixer[insertreturn].Examples:
compressor/limiters,graphicequalizers.
“Parallel”meansthataportionofthesignalinthe
mixeristappedofftothedevice(auxsend),processed
andreturnedtothemixer(stereoreturn)tobemixed
withtheoriginal“dry”signal.Thisway,multiple
channelscanallmakeuseofthesameeffectsdevice.
Examples:reverb,digitaldelay.
