The1202VLZ4’spancontrolsemployadesigncalled
“ConstantLoudness.”Ithasnothingtodowithliving
nexttoanall-nightdisco.Asyouturnthepan[26]knob
fromlefttoright(therebycausingthesoundtomove
fromthelefttothecentertotheright),thesoundwill
appeartoremainatthesamevolume(orloudness).
Ifyouhaveachannelpannedhardleft(orright)and
reading0dB,itmustdipdownabout4dBontheleft
(orright)whenpannedcenter.Todootherwise(the
wayBrandXcompactmixersdo)wouldmakethesound
appearmuchlouderwhenpannedcenter.
3-Band EQ
The1202VLZ4has3-bandequalizationatcarefully
selectedpoints—lowshelvingat80Hz,midpeaking
at2.5kHz,andhishelvingat12kHz.“Shelving”means
thatthecircuitryboostsorcutsallfrequenciespastthe
speciedfrequency.Forexample,rotatingthelowEQ
knob15dBtotherightboostsbassstartingat80Hzand
continuingdowntothelowestnoteyouneverheard.
“Peaking”meansthatcertainfrequenciesforma“hill”
aroundthecenterfrequency—2.5kHzinthecaseof
themidEQ.
27. Low EQ
Thiscontrolgivesyou
upto15dBboostorcut
below80Hz.Thecircuitis
at(noboostorcut)atthe
centerdetentposition.This
frequencyrepresentsthe
punchinbassdrums,bass
guitar,fatsynthpatches,
andsomereallyserious
malesingers.
Usedinconjunctionwith
thelowcut[3]switch,
youcanboostthelowEQ
withoutinjectingatonof
subsonicdebrisintothe
mix.
28. Mid EQ
Shortfor“midrange,”
thisknobprovides15dB
ofboostorcut,centered
at2.5kHz,alsoatatthe
centerdetent.Midrange
EQisoftenthoughtofas
themostdynamic,because
thefrequenciesthatdene
anyparticularsoundarealmostalwaysfoundinthis
range.YoucancreatemanyinterestingandusefulEQ
changesbyturningthisknobdownaswellasup.
